The Hemingway Gertrude Stein Bond: How Did It Shape Modern Writing? Find Out Here
That Hemingway, he sure was somethin’. He went to Paris, you know. Met that Gertrude Stein woman there. She was a big shot, writin’ and collectin’ pictures and all that fancy stuff. She wrote a lot, I heard, but it was always the same words over and over. Some folks said it was smart, but I dunno, seemed kinda silly to me.
Heard she took that Hemingway boy under her wing. Like a mother hen, she was, always cluckin’ around him. He was part of her group, they called it the “Lost Generation“. Lost, all of ’em, wanderin’ around Paris after that big war.
Hemingway and Stein, Birds of a Feather?
Now, that Hemingway, he was a writer, too. A real good one, some say. He wrote stories, short ones, long ones. Wrote about all sorts of things. War, and love, and bullfights. Not my cup of tea, those bullfights. Too much blood and guts for this old gal.

- They all talked a lot, I reckon, about writin’ and art.
He learned from that Stein woman, they say. Learned to write simple. Not too many big words. Just plain and simple, like me talkin’ to you now. She said he should write that way, clear as a bell. No need for all them fancy words, she told him. And no need for all them commas and what not. Just say what you got to say, plain and simple.
That Lost Generation
They were all lost, wanderin’ around. That war messed ’em up real good. They didn’t know what to do with themselves, so they went to Paris. Tried to forget, I reckon. Drank a lot, I heard. Wrote a lot, too. Maybe writin’ helped ’em forget.
This Hemingway, he wrote about that war, too. Wrote about how bad it was. How it messed up your head. He knew, he was there. Drove an ambulance, I heard. Saw a lot of bad things. Things a young man shouldn’t see.
Writin’ Simple
That Stein woman, she sure liked his writin’. Said he was a good one. Said he was gonna be famous. And she was right, wasn’t she? He became real famous. Everybody knows his name now. Hemingway. Sounds like a strong name, don’t it?
But he wasn’t always with that group, you know. He went his own way after a while. Found his own way of writin’. Still simple, though. Still clear as a bell. Just like that Gertrude Stein taught him.
- Hemingway, he wrote about the war.
- He wrote about men being men.
- He wrote about drinkin’ and fishin’ and huntin’.
- He wrote about love, too, sometimes.
Hemingway, a Big Shot
He got real famous, that Hemingway. Won prizes and everything. People all over the world read his books. Even made movies out of ’em. He was a big shot, alright.
But he was still just a man, you know. A man who saw a lot of bad things. A man who tried to forget. A man who wrote it all down.
That Gertrude Stein, she knew what she was talkin’ about. She saw somethin’ in that Hemingway boy. Somethin’ special. And she helped him find it. Helped him become the writer he was meant to be.
Modern, They Called It
They called it “modern”, this way of writin’. All simple and plain. No fancy stuff. Just tellin’ it like it is. I guess that’s what Hemingway did. He told it like it was. And people liked it. They still do.
That Stein woman, she was modern, too. Liked all that new art. The kind that looks all jumbled up and crazy. But she liked Hemingway’s writin’. Said it was like that new art. Simple, but strong.

I don’t know much about all that modern stuff. But I know a good story when I hear one. And Hemingway, he could tell a good story. That Gertrude Stein, she helped him learn how. He was a good writer, that Hemingway. A real good writer. And that Stein woman, she wasn’t so bad herself, I reckon. Smart lady. Knew a good thing when she saw it. Even if she did use the same words a lot.
