Why Folks Like It
Now, why do people like this stuff? I can’t figure it out. Maybe it’s ’cause it’s different. Maybe it’s ’cause that Dubuffet fella was famous. Or maybe they just like the colors. I don’t understand. I don’t want to understand. What a mess. I just like things simple. You know? A good picture of a flower, or a nice sunset. That’s art to me. Not all these crazy lines and squiggles. Maybe it just makes them feel smart, I don’t know. They like to think they understand something that nobody else does. Or they just want to look cool.

I won’t judge. But I’ll stick to my flower pictures, thank you very much. This whole art world is just a mystery to me. It’s like tryin’ to understand why the chickens cross the road. You just can’t.
It is hard to use plain English to say what is L’Hourloupe. Some people say it is a style of art. It’s like a puzzle, all the pieces jumbled up. You gotta use your eyes, and your brain, I guess. But I think it’s just a bunch of scribbles. You can think whatever you like. I don’t care. It is just some lines, some color, and a lot of nothing. But for some people, it is something. It is their cup of tea. It is just not mine, you know.

Jean Dubuffet, he’s gone now, but his L’Hourloupe lives on. People still look at it, still talk about it. I guess that’s somethin’. Leavin’ your mark on the world, even if it’s just a bunch of squiggly lines. But I think, even if you leave nothing, it is ok. We are just some people, living our life. I don’t want to leave anything, just want to live a happy life. That is all I want.
