The Rise of Postmodern Photography： Challenging Authenticity in Art
Eh, “postmodern photography,” it’s one of them things them fancy folks go on ’bout. But lemme tell ya, it’s somethin’ different from the old ways, that’s for sure. Now, these folks, they call it “appropriation.” That there means they’re borrowin’ pictures that’s already out there – ya know, other folks’ work – and they twist it around, slap on their own ideas. Back in the day, people’d say, “ain’t that just copyin’?” but postmodern photographers, they see it like tellin’ a story from a whole other side. They’re reusin’ what’s already there but showin’ it in ways that make ya think twice. I reckon it’s like quiltin’. Ya take bits and pieces, make somethin’ new, and each part’s got its own bit of history in it.
Let me tell ya, this whole “postmodernism” thing? It’s a bit like folks throwin’ out them old ideas ’bout what art’s s’posed to be. Used to be, art was all about what’s true, what’s real. Take them modernists, they liked straight, clean shots – kinda like when you hang clothes on the line just so, nice and orderly. They called it “straight photography.” But postmodernists? Nah, they look at them lines and say, “why keep ’em straight?” They mix it all up, bring in bits from everywhere, pop art, ads, ya name it. Like that Warhol fella – he took pictures of that Marilyn gal and painted ’em again and again, makin’ her look different each time. Folks never saw that before!
They also like to question this thing called “authenticity.” Now, that there means what’s real, what’s true. Used to be, ya took a picture to show the truth, right? Postmodern folks, they say, “well, maybe truth ain’t just one thing.” They mix stuff together – high art, low art – kinda like throwin’ canned peaches in with fresh fruit, if ya get me. They don’t care if it’s fancy or plain, they just care if it gets ya thinkin’. So with these photos, they might take somethin’ everyone knows, like them ads or them movie stars, and show ‘em in new ways so folks go, “huh, never thought ’bout it like that!”
Now, another thing these postmodern photographers like to play with is somethin’ called “hybridity.” Now that’s just a fancy way of sayin’ they don’t wanna stick to one kind of thing. They mix things together, blend ‘em so ya don’t know where one thing stops and the next starts. Back in the day, folks thought art should look one way or another, either fancy or plain. Postmodern folks? Nah, they take the plain and the fancy, stir ’em all together like a big ol’ pot of stew. They don’t mind blurrin’ them lines between what’s what. Makes it so’s ya can’t really tell where one thing ends and the next begins, kinda like fog rollin’ over a hill.
And ya see, one thing these postmodern folks are big on is makin’ ya think twice ’bout stuff. They’ll take somethin’ that looks ordinary and make it strange. Or they’ll take somethin’ strange and make it feel like home. Like lookin’ at an old photo of yer grandma’s house and realizin’ there’s stuff there ya never noticed, like the pattern on the kitchen floor or the color of the doorknob. Makes ya wonder if ya ever saw the whole thing right the first time. Postmodernism, it don’t give ya clear answers. Nah, it likes to ask questions, make ya think about what ya see. They say it’s all ’bout how ya experience it.
So, to sum it up, postmodern photography, it’s like takin’ a new path on a familiar road. It’s got a bit of the old ways mixed with new ideas, throwin’ what’s real and pretendin’ all in one big ol’ pot. It don’t settle for simple truths, nah, it wants ya to look at things a bit closer, wonderin’ what’s real and what’s just made up. And maybe, just maybe, that’s what makes it so darn interestin’ to folks these days.
