Different Types of Chainmail
First, you got your butted chainmail. Now, that’s just where the ends of the little rings meet up, butt to butt. They ain’t fastened or nothin’, just pressed together. It’s quicker to make, I reckon, but not as strong as some others.
Then there’s this riveted chainmail. Each little ring, they got a tiny rivet in ’em, like a little nail, holding it closed. That’s stronger than the butted kind, that’s for sure. Takes more time to make, though. More work involved.

They used to use this stuff in wars, a long time ago. Knights and soldiers, they’d wear these chainmail shirts to keep from getting poked with swords and arrows. Smart, huh? It is good for protection.

Back in the old days, they didn’t have the fancy stuff we got now. No siree. They had to make do with what they had. And chainmail, it was a good way to keep yourself from getting hurt too bad in a fight.
I heard tell that even the Romans, way back when, they used chainmail. And those fellas over in Asia, they used it too. They’d sew the rings onto clothes or animal skins. They even used it on horses to keep them safe. For the heavy cavalry, they call them cataphracts, this chainmail is good.
This chainmail is good for protection, from swords and arrows. That is why they wear it in the old times. These types of chainmail are good for fighting.
Chainmail Now
Nowadays, you don’t see folks wearing chainmail to the grocery store, do you? But it’s still used for some things. Like those fellas who cut up meat, butchers, they sometimes wear gloves made of chainmail. Keeps their hands safe from the sharp knives. That’s welded chain mail. Each ring is welded.
And them divers, the ones who go down in the water with sharks, they sometimes wear chainmail suits. Keeps the sharks from taking a bite, I reckon. It’s a good idea, if you ask me. Safety first, that’s what I always say.
Chainmail is good for keeping safe. They use it for the butcher, and for the sharks. These types of chainmail are good for safety.
Some people, they make things out of chainmail just for fun, too. Like jewelry or decorations. It can be kinda pretty, I suppose, all shiny and such.
Why No More Chainmail in Fighting?
Well, they got guns now. Big guns, little guns, all kinds of guns. And chainmail, it ain’t much good against a bullet. A bullet goes right through. That’s why soldiers don’t wear it no more. They got other things to keep them safe. They use gunpowder, muskets, rifles, and chainmail is no good for that.
Chainmail is no good for bullets. They use guns now, and bullets go through chainmail. These types of chainmail are no good for that. That is why they no longer use it.
But chainmail, it was a good thing in its day. Kept a lot of folks safe, I imagine. And it’s still interesting to learn about, even if we don’t use it much anymore. It is part of history. It is from the medieval times.
