DIY Ancient Roman Costume on a Budget: Craft a Toga With Cheap Materials

Today, I woke up and decided, hey, why not try making an ancient Roman costume? I mean, who doesn’t want to look like they just stepped out of a history book, right?

So, I started by gathering some stuff from around the house. I grabbed an old white bed sheet – you know, the one I never use. Then, I rummaged through my closet for anything that looked remotely Roman. I found this long, brown scarf that I figured could work as a sort of belt. I also grabbed some brown sandals. Nothing too fancy.

First, I draped the sheet over my left shoulder, making sure it covered my whole body. It was a bit tricky to get it right, but I managed. I wrapped the longer end of the sheet around my back, brought it over to the front, and then tossed it over my left shoulder again. It took a few tries, but I finally got it to stay in place. The sheet was pretty big, so there was a lot of extra fabric. I played around with it, tucking and folding until it looked somewhat like those pictures of Roman togas I saw online.

  • Drape the sheet over your left shoulder.
  • Wrap it around your back.
  • Bring it over to the front and toss it over your left shoulder again.
  • Tuck and fold the extra fabric until it looks right.

Then, I used the brown scarf as a belt. I tied it around my waist to keep the whole thing together and give it some shape. It actually looked pretty decent! I even fastened a safety pin on my shoulder to make it look like one of those Roman brooches. For the finishing touch, I put on my brown sandals.

What I Learned

Honestly, it was easier than I thought it would be. It’s amazing what you can do with just a bed sheet and a scarf. If you’re looking for a last-minute costume idea, this is definitely a good one. And it’s super cheap too, so you won’t have to spend a lot of money. I tried this with white, but I bet it would look cool in other colors too.

So there you have it, my DIY ancient Roman costume adventure. It was a fun little project, and I ended up with a pretty cool outfit. Who knew history could be so fashionable?
