Read up on his life, what he did, why people think he’s great. He was all about peace, reaching out to other religions, and just being a strong moral figure. I even went to check the Pope’s history, there are some rivals in the Roman Empire.
Next up was Pope Leo I. This guy was from way back, like the 400s. Turns out, he was a big deal because he stood up to Attila the Hun and convinced him not to sack Rome. That’s pretty badass if you ask me. Plus, he was really important in shaping some key Christian beliefs.
After that, I looked into Pope Gregory I, also known as Gregory the Great. He was around in the late 500s and early 600s. This guy was a powerhouse. He reformed the Church, sent out missionaries to spread Christianity, and even had a hand in developing the Gregorian chant. Busy guy, huh?
Then there was Pope Nicholas I, from the 800s. He was all about asserting the Pope’s authority over everyone, even kings. He had some pretty intense showdowns with various rulers and bishops, trying to make sure the Church was top dog. He was really influential in shaping the power of the papacy.
After reading about all these guys, I started putting together a little table, just to keep track of their key achievements and why they were considered great. It looked something like this:

So I checked out some more sources, some history books, and even a few forums where people were discussing the topic. Just wanted to see if there were any other popes that should be on the list.
In the end, I concluded that those four—John Paul II, Leo I, Gregory I, and Nicholas I—were pretty consistently considered the greatest.
