Samurai Gauntlets: How to Use Them? Learn How to Use This Cool Samurai Gear.
Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with some historical stuff lately, specifically, samurai gear. I decided to try my hand at making some samurai gauntlets, or “kote” as they’re called in Japanese. It’s been a wild ride, let me tell you.
First, I went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out what these things even were. Turns out, kote are basically armored sleeves that samurai wore to protect their arms. But there’s this shorter version, the “han kote,” which just covers the hand and forearm. That sounded a bit easier to tackle for a first attempt, so han kote it was.
Now, I’m no blacksmith, so I had to get creative with the materials. I started with some thick leather pieces for the base. I figured, if it’s tough enough for a biker jacket, it should work for this. I cut the leather into shapes that would roughly cover my hand and forearm. Then I start to stitched them together with some heavy-duty thread. It wasn’t pretty, but it was starting to look like something.
Next up was the armor plating. Traditionally, I think they used metal, but I went with some hard plastic. Found some old plastic containers, cut them into small plates, and started attaching them to the leather. I tried layering them a bit, like scales, for some extra protection, because it felt like a cool idea. I used a combination of glue and more stitching to secure the plates. It was a bit of a mess, honestly, but it worked!
Then came the fun part: making it look somewhat decent. I grabbed some black paint and went to town on the plastic plates, giving them a metallic look. I also added some red cords, you know, like what you see in those movies. I weaved them around the plates and through the leather. It added a nice pop of color and made the whole thing look a bit more “authentic,” or at least, that’s what I told myself.
Finally, I had to figure out how to actually wear these things. I added some leather straps with buckles so I could fasten them around my arm. After a few adjustments, they actually fit pretty well.
So, there you have it. My homemade han kote. They’re not exactly museum quality, but I’m pretty proud of them. I mean, I made these with my own two hands! And who knows, maybe I’ll try making the full kote next time.
I try to wear them. It is heavy but seems tough. It can protect me from knives and other weapons. I wonder, “Is it bulletproof?” So I go to check it. It seems like it cannot protect me from modern guns. I think maybe it can only protect me from medieval guns. But I don’t have a medieval gun to test it. If I have a chance, I want to test it.
Overall, this was a fun project. I learned a lot about samurai armor, and I got to exercise my crafting skills. Plus, now I have a cool pair of gauntlets to show off. How many people can say that?
