How to Make a Chainmail Shirt: Easy DIY Project, Learn Today!
Okay, so, I’ve always wanted to try making one of those cool chainmail shirts, you know, like the knights used to wear? It seemed like a fun project. So I finally decided to give it a shot.
First, I had to get my hands on some materials. I wasn’t about to make my own rings from scratch, so I just bought a bunch of metal rings online. I also picked up a couple of pairs of pliers—one to hold the rings steady and the other to open and close them.
Getting Started
Once I had all my stuff, I started by opening up a bunch of rings. I just used the pliers to twist them open a bit. It took a while, but it was kind of relaxing, you know? Like a meditative exercise in destroying small metal circles.
Next, I took four closed rings and linked them onto one open ring. Then, I closed that ring with the pliers. That’s the basic unit right there, what the internet calls the “European 4 in 1” pattern. Easy peasy.
Building the Chain
From there, I just kept adding more rings, following that same pattern. Connect two closed rings with an open one, then connect that to the main piece. It’s repetitive, but you start to get into a rhythm. And you can see your chainmail starting to grow, which is pretty satisfying.

Making it a Shirt
Now, I didn’t have a master plan for the shirt’s design. I just started making a big sheet of this stuff, figuring I’d shape it into a shirt later. I’d work on it a little each day, watching TV or whatever. It was a good way to keep my hands busy. The big sheet was quite heavy.
Once the sheet was big enough, I started shaping it. I folded it in half and connected the sides, leaving holes for the arms and head. This part was a bit tricky, and I had to redo a few sections, but I got the hang of it eventually.
I added some sleeves by making smaller tubes of chainmail and attaching them to the armholes. Again, a lot of trial and error here, but that’s part of the fun, right? Finally, I made the front part. I didn’t have a plan, just made the shape and connected it to the main sheet.
The Final Product
After many hours of work, I finally had a chainmail shirt! It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty proud of it. It’s heavy, clunky, and definitely not something you’d want to wear every day. But it looks cool, and I made it with my own two hands. And it didn’t even take that long!
