Man, I’ve always been fascinated by ancient weapons, especially swords. There’s just something so cool about them, you know? So, the other day, I was thinking about my trip to Greece last summer, and it hit me – why not start a collection of Greek swords? I mean, those guys had some serious skills back in the day.
I started by diving into some research online. I learned that there were mainly two types of swords used by the ancient Greeks: the xiphos and the makhaira. Apparently, the xiphos was a straight, double-edged shortsword, and the makhaira was more of a curved, single-edged blade. That part was easy.
The hard part was figuring out where to actually find these things. I spent hours browsing different websites, but most of them seemed pretty sketchy. I mean, I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure you can’t just buy a real ancient Greek sword on any website.
Then, it hit me. I remembered all those amazing artifacts I saw at the Acropolis Museum in Athens. It’s not like I could buy one from there, but it seemed like a good place to start. Maybe they had some resources or recommendations. So, I decided to give them a call.
After a few tries, I finally got through to someone who actually knew what they were talking about. They gave me a list of reputable dealers and auction houses that specialize in ancient artifacts. I felt a wave of relief, I’m not gonna lie. It was such a pain to find real sources with real swords.
Here are some notes from my talk with the museum staff:

- Price should be within the range of similar swords.
Armed with this new information, I started reaching out to some of these dealers. It was definitely a process, let me tell you. After a few weeks, I finally found it – a beautiful xiphos sword from a reputable dealer. It wasn’t cheap, that’s for sure, but it was worth it. The feeling of holding a piece of history in my hands was just incredible. It felt heavy and real.
Now, I’m not stopping there. I’ve got my eye on a makhaira sword next. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll even expand my collection to include other ancient weapons. It’s an expensive hobby, but for me, it’s more than just collecting. It’s about connecting with the past and appreciating the craftsmanship of these ancient warriors.
