Okay, so I was checking out some stuff about Edward Gorey artworks, and I gotta say, it turned into a whole thing. I started off just wanting to see what’s out there, you know, get a feel for his art.
First, I looked around for what art pieces of his are even available. I mean, the guy’s an American artist, and he’s got a pretty unique style, it’s kinda dark but also funny in a weird way. I found out that he’s mostly known for his illustrations, and yeah, his books are usually in the humor or cartoon section, but they’re also considered surrealist art. I thought that’s interesting, right?
Then I started to look into how to actually buy his original pieces. Found some on a website called artnet. There’s actually a big collection there. I also checked out this other site, MutualArt, which had even more of his stuff, plus some auction info.
But here’s the thing, his style is so detailed. He uses a lot of cross-hatching, it’s like every little thing in his drawings has a pattern. And some of his works, like ‘The West Wing’, don’t even have words, but they still tell a story. That’s what makes it so cool, I think.
I also learned that even though he’s not exactly a children’s book author, he did think of some of his work as children’s literature. But the publishers usually marketed it to adults. He did a lot of illustrated alphabets. Like ‘The Gashlycrumb Tinies’, which is pretty morbid, honestly. It’s about 26 kids who all die in different ways. One of them, Maud, gets swept out to sea, and another, Neville, dies of boredom.
I also found out that he illustrated a couple of books by Edward Lear. It’s all pretty fascinating stuff, but it’s not easy to find originals. And even if you do, you gotta make sure it’s the real deal, you know? And then there’s the whole pricing thing, which is a whole other can of worms.
But yeah, that’s basically what I did. I went from just casually looking at Edward Gorey’s art to diving deep into his style, his works, and how to find and buy his pieces. It was way more involved than I thought it would be, but it was also super interesting.
