90s Graffiti: How to Get That Old School Look Right Now
Man, I’ve always been fascinated by that raw, vibrant 90s graffiti aesthetic. You know, the kind you’d see splashed across brick walls in old-school hip-hop videos? I decided to give it a shot myself, even though I’m no artist.
First off, I dug around the internet for some inspiration, ended up scrolling through tons of images on Pinterest and some stock photo sites. I wasn’t trying to copy anything exactly, just wanted to get a feel for the style. Found some cool fonts and color schemes that really screamed “90s.”
Then came the practical part. I learned that the first step is mastering the graffiti alphabet. Sounds basic, but it’s the foundation of everything, right? I started sketching out letters, trying to get that blocky, bold look. It was rough at first, let me tell you. My letters looked more like a kid’s scribbles than street art.
But I kept practicing. I filled pages and pages of my sketchbook with different variations of the alphabet. Slowly but surely, I started to see some improvement. My lines got cleaner, my shapes more defined. I even started experimenting with different fills and outlines.
Once I felt somewhat confident with the basic letters, I moved on to trying out some simple words. Nothing fancy, just a few tags here and there. I discovered that adding a drop shadow really makes the letters pop. Makes ’em look 3D and all that. Also, throwing in some cracks in the letters adds that gritty, worn-out vibe, which is super cool.
Another trick I picked up was outlining the piece. But here’s the key: you gotta leave a tiny gap between the fill and the outline. It’s a subtle thing, but it makes a huge difference. Gives it that classic graffiti look. And for a bit of extra flair, I tried adding a glitch effect using short horizontal lines. It’s like the letters are kinda breaking up or something. Pretty neat, huh?
Finally, I decided to put it all together and create a full piece. I picked a short phrase, sketched it out, and then went over it with markers. It wasn’t perfect, not by a long shot. But you know what? It felt like mine. It had that 90s vibe I was going for, and it was a hell of a lot of fun to make.
