Discover the True Story: Battle of Fort Jackson and St. Philip

Okay, so today I’m gonna talk about that time I tried to recreate the Battle of Forts Jackson and St. Philip. You know, that big Civil War thing down in New Orleans? Yeah, it was a wild ride.

It all started when I stumbled upon some old articles about this battle. I was like, “Hey, this sounds cool, I wanna dig deeper!” So I started reading everything I could find about it. I learned that these two forts, Jackson and St. Philip, were like the guardians of New Orleans, sitting there on the Mississippi River. And back in 1862, the Union Navy decided they wanted to take the city, so they had to get past these forts first.

First thing I did was try to understand the setup. I found out that early Union plans were all about splitting the Confederacy by taking control of the Mississippi. And this battle was a major step in that plan. The Union fleet, which I pictured as a bunch of tough-looking ships, went up against these two Confederate forts. It was like a big showdown.

I tried to imagine what it was like back then. Fort St. Philip got hammered by the Union ships. Each division of the fleet took turns firing at it. That must have been intense! I read that the Union Navy lost one ship during their run past the forts, while the defenders, those Confederate guys, lost twelve. That’s a big difference!

  • Made a list of key events: the Union’s plan, the attack on the forts, the losses on both sides.
  • Visualized the battle: Union ships moving up the river, forts firing back.
  • Noted the outcome: Union victory, New Orleans captured.

After the battle, some Union soldiers marched into New Orleans and put up the “Stars and Stripes” on the capitol building. That was like their way of saying, “We won!” I read that the Confederate casualties were pretty high, something like 845 killed, wounded, or missing. Man, that’s a lot of people.

Setting up my own simulation

So, I got this crazy idea to try and simulate the battle. I know, I know, it sounds nuts, but I was really into it. I didn’t have actual ships or forts, obviously, so I had to get creative. I used some model ships I had lying around and set them up on a big map of the Mississippi River.

I even tried to recreate the bombardment of Fort St. Philip. I used some small firecrackers to simulate the explosions. Okay, maybe that was a bit much, and my neighbors definitely weren’t thrilled, but it was all in the name of historical accuracy, right?

What I learned

This whole project was a blast, even if it was a bit chaotic. I learned so much about the Battle of Forts Jackson and St. Philip and the Civil War in general. It made me appreciate how complex and intense these historical events were. And it gave me a whole new perspective on the importance of New Orleans during that time.

It was definitely a memorable experience. I might not have perfectly recreated the battle, but I sure had fun trying. And hey, I didn’t start any fires or anything, so I’d call it a success! Plus, now I have a cool story to tell. Anyone else ever try to recreate a historical battle? Let me know in the comments!
