Okay, so I had this idea the other day to recreate Cindy Sherman’s “Untitled #205,” and I’m here to walk you through my little adventure.
First things first, I gathered all my materials. I didn’t have the exact stuff, but hey, who does? I found some old clothes in my closet, dug up some makeup I haven’t used in ages, and borrowed a few props from my roommate.
Then, I started with the outfit. I studied the original photo closely, but I couldn’t get an exact match. It is hard to find the old clothes! I tried to find something similar in style and color. I settled on a dress that kind of looked like the one in the picture, at least in terms of the overall vibe. I remember it is hard to find the exact same thing from back in 1989!
Next up, makeup. Now, I’m no makeup artist, but I gave it my best shot. I focused on the eyes and lips, trying to mimic the expression Sherman has in the photo. It’s tougher than it looks, let me tell you! But I did not have many other choices because I am not a professional in this area.
The setting was a bit tricky. I don’t have a fancy studio, so I used my living room. I moved some furniture around, hung a plain sheet as a backdrop, and adjusted the lighting as best as I could. My living room is not so big, and I moved things all day long.
Once everything was set up, I started taking pictures. I used my phone’s camera and a self-timer. I took a bunch of shots, trying different angles and poses. It was a lot of trial and error because I am not used to taking pictures like this.
Afterward, I looked through all the photos and picked the one that I thought came closest to the original. It wasn’t perfect, but I was pretty happy with how it turned out.
Finally, I did some minor editing on my phone. I adjusted the colors a bit to give it a more vintage look, just like Sherman’s style in the late ’80s.
My Thoughts
Overall, it was a fun and challenging project. It really made me appreciate the work that goes into creating a photograph like Sherman’s. And also it is hard to do all this in a small room. Plus it is hard to find the clothes from 1989. I am just a normal guy who likes photography, not a professional like Cindy. But this is a fun experience and I hope you like it too!
- It’s not just about snapping a picture; there’s so much thought and preparation involved.
- It also gave me a new perspective on how fashion, makeup, and setting can completely transform a person’s appearance.
- I might not be Cindy Sherman, but I definitely had a blast stepping into her shoes, even if just for a little while!
