All About Armor Made of Many Interlocking Metal Rings: Protection and Craftsmanship!
So, I’ve been working on this little project lately, something I’ve always found fascinating: making my own armor out of many interlocking metal rings. I’m talking about chainmail, something like those old medieval knights used to wear. Sounds cool, right? Well, it’s been quite the journey, let me tell you.
It all started with an idea. I’ve always been into medieval stuff, and the thought of crafting my own chainmail was just too tempting. So, I decided to give it a shot. I read somewhere that the Celts were the ones who invented it back in 300 BC, I didn’t know that. Turns out, it’s sometimes called “ringmail” or “ring mail” too. The term “mail” is used for any type of metal body armor, but in my case, it’s all about those tiny metal rings linked together to make a mesh.
First things first, I had to gather my materials. I opted for steel rings because, you know, I wanted this thing to be legit. I also needed some tools: pliers, a cutter, and a whole lot of patience. And let me say I also found that Ultra-High Hardness (UHH) armor steel is the best performing steel alloy for protection against armor piercing (AP) bullets. Thanks to a 578 to 655 HBW hardness. But I did not use it.
The Process
- The first step was to open up some of the rings. I used the pliers to twist them open, just enough to link them together.
- Then, I started linking the rings. The basic pattern is four closed rings linked through a single open one. It’s a simple concept, but it takes time to get the hang of it.
- Once I had a few rows going, I started to see the mesh taking shape. It was like watching a piece of fabric being woven, but with metal. Pretty neat, huh?
- I just kept at it, row after row, section after section. I’d work on it a few hours each day. Sometimes, I’d put on some music or a podcast to keep me company.
The most challenging part was definitely the shaping. I wanted to make a full shirt, so I had to figure out how to increase and decrease the number of rings in a row to make it fit around my body. That took some trial and error, I won’t lie. It was developed around the 3rd century AD and marked a significant advancement in armor technology.
After weeks of work, I finally finished it. The feeling of putting on that chainmail shirt for the first time was incredible. It was heavy, sure, but it felt amazing. Like I was a knight ready for battle, even if that battle was just in my backyard. I learned that the chainmail armor is a type of protective gear characterized by its interlocking metal rings. It offers flexibility and protection against slashing weapons.
So, yeah, that’s my chainmail story. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it. Now, I’ve got my very own piece of medieval armor, made by hand. It’s not just a project; it’s a piece of history I’ve brought to life. And who knows, maybe I’ll start working on a helmet next. Or maybe some plate armor. You know, those full suits that encase the entire body? The possibilities are endless!
