Guide to Medieval Undergarments Mens Style: Tips You Need to Know!

Then I looked up some patterns online, which is really just basic shapes. You basically make a big rectangle with a drawstring at the top. It was a struggle at first and took me some time to find some good reference, I have to say.
- The material: I used linen, but I read that they also used wool and leather. Linen seemed like the most comfortable choice.
- The pattern: Super simple. It’s really just a rectangle with some clever folding and a hole for your legs.
- Sewing: I did it all by hand. Yeah, it took forever, but I wanted that authentic feel. Plus, I messed up a few times and had to rip out seams, but hey, that’s part of the process, right?
After what felt like ages, I had a pair of braies! They were baggy and kind of weird-looking, but they felt surprisingly comfy. I even wore them around the house for a day just to see what it was like. Let me tell you, it’s a different experience, but not bad.
Next up, the under tunic. I used the same linen fabric as the braies. The pattern for this was a bit more complicated – you know, sleeves and a neckline. But, after wrestling with the braies, this felt like a breeze. The hardest part was getting the fit right. I had to take it in a few times to make it fit like I imagined it should.
Making it Work Together
Once both pieces were done, it was time to put them together. I tucked the under tunic into the braies, just like they did back in the day. It felt a bit strange at first, all that fabric bunched up, but I got used to it. I even made a simple belt out of some leather scraps to complete the look. I tried to make it look like the picture I found online.
