Curious About Anglo Saxon Facial Features? Heres What You Should Know!
Today, I’m gonna talk about Anglo-Saxon facial features. Now, I gotta say, this was a bit of a rabbit hole for me, but a fun one!
So, I started off just kind of wondering what these Anglo-Saxon folks looked like, you know? I mean, you see all these historical dramas and movies, but how close are they to reality? I did a quick search and found some interesting stuff.
First thing I did was hit up Google. I typed in “Anglo-Saxon facial features” and went down the list of results. I skipped past all the academic papers – ain’t nobody got time for that! – and focused on forums and blog posts where people were actually talking about this stuff.
I stumbled upon a forum, r/HistoriansAnswered, I believe it’s called. Folks there were saying that Anglo-Saxons, being of Germanic origin, probably had fair skin, you know, the pale kind. And a bunch of them likely had blonde or light brown hair. Blue or green eyes were probably pretty common too. Of course, not everyone looked the same, just like today.
Then I dug a little deeper. Some people were talking about specific features like high cheekbones being common among Scandinavians. One comment that made me think talked about facial hair, they asked if Celts and Anglo-Saxons had facial hair, and said Anglo-Saxon Kings are often depicted in manuscripts with thick facial hair.
I found this other website, talking about how Anglo-Saxons were mostly farmers. Makes sense, right? They had to work the land, grow their food, all that jazz. They were also skilled craftsmen, making jewelry and stuff. Pretty cool, huh?
- Most of them were fair-skinned, with blond or light brown hair.
- Blue or green eyes were probably common.
- They were primarily farmers, but also skilled craftsmen.
So, I put all this together, and here’s what I figured: If you were to picture a typical Anglo-Saxon, you’d probably imagine someone with light skin, maybe some freckles if they spent a lot of time in the sun. Their hair could be anywhere from blond to brown, and their eyes would likely be blue or green. Some might have had red hair, too, apparently. They were probably pretty sturdy folks, too, from all that hard work.
It’s not like there’s a perfect picture, but it gives you a general idea. It was a fun little dive into history for me, and I hope you found it interesting too!
