Checking Out 0 Through 9 by Jasper Johns: A Simple Look at a Famous Artwork
Okay, so, I wanted to mess around with the numbers 0 through 9, right? Just those simple digits we all learned as kids. I had this idea to do something artsy with them, nothing too fancy, but just to see how I could play around with them.
I got started by grabbing some stencils of the numbers. I figured stencils would give them a neat, uniform look. I laid them all out on my table, and I just started to overlap them. 0 on top of 1, then 2, and so on. It got messy real fast, but that was the point! I wanted them to blend together, to lose a bit of their individual identities and become something new.
Working with the stencils was pretty straightforward. I had these sheets of plastic with the numbers cut out, and I used them to trace the digits onto paper. The tricky part was deciding how much to overlap and where to place each number. I didn’t want it to look too random, but I also didn’t want it to be too structured. It was all about finding that sweet spot.
- First, I outlined the basic shapes with a pencil. This was just to get a feel for the layout.
- Then I used different colors and markers to go over them, making the numbers stand out more.
- I even used a bit of a wax-resist technique in some places, just to mix things up a bit.
I spent a good few hours on this, moving the stencils around, trying out different combinations. My table was a total mess, with paper and colors everywhere, but it was a fun kind of chaos. I kept at it until I felt like I had something that looked interesting, something that made you look twice to figure out what was going on.
The end result was this cool, layered image of all the digits mashed together. It was kind of abstract, but not in a way that felt too “artsy” or pretentious. You could still recognize the individual numbers, but they also formed this new, collective shape. It was like they were all dancing together on the paper.
I’m no artist, but I was pretty happy with how it turned out. It was just a fun experiment, a way to see something familiar in a new light. I think I might try doing more stuff like this. Maybe with letters next time? Or even, flags? Who knows! The important thing is to keep exploring and not be afraid to make a mess.
What I Learned
This little project taught me that even the simplest things, like numbers, can be seen in many different ways. It’s all about perspective and being willing to experiment. And it doesn’t take much to turn something ordinary into something a bit more interesting. Just some stencils, paper, and a bit of time. Oh, and a willingness to get your hands dirty, of course!
