Cindy Sherman Historical Portraits: How to Recognize Her Style and Why Its Important
Okay, let’s talk about something that kinda blew my mind recently – Cindy Sherman’s “Historical Portraits”. I’ve always been a fan of photography, especially when it gets weird and artsy, and Sherman is like the queen of that stuff.
So, I started this whole project by diving deep into Sherman’s work. It’s crazy how she can change herself into all these different people. She’s like a chameleon, but with costumes and makeup instead of, you know, actual skin changes. For these “Historical Portraits”, she went full-on into old-school paintings. Think Renaissance, but with a twist.
My first step was just looking at a ton of her photos. I mean, I spent hours just scrolling through them online, getting lost in all the details. Then, I had to pick a few that really stood out to me. It was tough, but I ended up with a list of like five or six that I thought I could maybe try to recreate.
The next part was probably the hardest: gathering all the materials. Let me tell you, finding the right kind of fabric to mimic those old-timey dresses is not easy! I hit up every thrift store and fabric shop in town. And don’t even get me started on the makeup. I watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials on theatrical makeup because, honestly, my regular makeup skills were not gonna cut it.

Then came the photography part. I don’t have a fancy studio or anything, so I just used my apartment. I played around with different lighting setups, trying to get that dramatic, old-master vibe. It took a lot of experimenting, but eventually, I got some shots that I was pretty happy with.
The Results
Honestly, the whole process was way more challenging than I expected, but it was also super rewarding. I learned a lot about makeup, costume design, and even art history. Plus, I got a whole new appreciation for Cindy Sherman’s work. She’s seriously a genius.
The photos I ended up with aren’t perfect, but I think they capture the spirit of what Sherman was doing. It’s like I stepped into those old paintings for a little while, and that’s pretty cool if you ask me. Would I do it again? Maybe. It was a lot of work, but seeing the final product made it all worthwhile. And who knows, maybe I’ll try another series of hers next time!
