Hey everybody, so I got this idea the other day to mess around with some Dr. Seuss stuff. You know, that guy who wrote all those wacky kids’ books? Well, it turns out he did a bunch of paintings at night, just for kicks. They call them his “Midnight Paintings.” I thought, why not give it a shot myself?
So, I grabbed some canvases and paints, cleared off my kitchen table, and waited until everyone else was asleep. It felt kinda sneaky, like I was doing something I wasn’t supposed to. Anyway, I started flipping through some of his books for inspiration. The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, all that good stuff.
I decided to start simple. I tried to copy one of his drawings, a fancy-looking bird sipping a martini. It was way harder than it looked! Those lines he makes, they’re so flowy and weird. I kept messing up, erasing, and starting over. My bird looked more like a blob with a beak.
Trying Something New
After a while, I got frustrated with trying to copy him exactly. So, I just started painting whatever came to mind. I made a crazy-looking tree with eyeballs for leaves. Then, I painted a cat with a hat, but this one was riding a unicycle. It was goofy, but it was fun!

Experimenting with Colors
I started playing around with colors, too. Seuss used a lot of bright, bold colors in his work. I mixed some red and yellow together and got this crazy orange that looked like it was glowing. I slapped that onto the canvas, and it looked wild! Then I added some purple and green, just because I could.
I ended up staying up way past my bedtime, just painting and goofing around. It was like being a kid again, just making a mess and not caring what anyone thought. When the sun started to come up, I finally stopped. I looked at my paintings, and they were definitely not as good as Dr. Seuss’s, but they were mine. And you know what? I liked them.
So, that’s my story about trying to paint like Dr. Seuss. It was a fun experiment, and I definitely recommend giving it a try, even if you’re not an artist. Just grab some paints, stay up late, and let your imagination run wild. You might surprise yourself!
