Is it possible to suffocate in a ball pit? How to avoid danger.
Today, I’m gonna tell you about something that’s been on my mind lately – can you suffocate in a ball pit? I know, it sounds kinda crazy, but I had to find out for myself. So, I decided to run a little experiment.
First off, I needed a ball pit. Not having one just lying around, I went ahead and bought a small inflatable one and a bunch of those colorful plastic balls. I set it up in my living room – much to my cat’s confusion, I might add.
My Experiment Setup
- Ball Pit: A small inflatable one, about 4 feet in diameter.
- Balls: Enough to fill it up to about 2 feet deep.
- Safety Measures: I had my roommate on standby, just in case things got weird.
- Observation: I planned to sit in it, lay down, and even try to bury myself a bit to see what happens.
So, I started by just sitting in the ball pit. I sat in there, tried to breathe normally. No problems there. Then, I tried lying down. It was kind of hard to move, and I could feel the pressure of the balls on me, but I was still breathing fine. I noticed that the balls were pretty well-sorted, leaving gaps between them, which I guess is good for airflow. I read somewhere that well-sorted balls have like 32% porosity, which means there’s a decent amount of air space.
Now for the tricky part – trying to bury myself a little. I started pushing the balls over me, covering myself up to my chest. It got a bit harder to breathe, not gonna lie. The weight of the balls was definitely noticeable. I could still breathe, but it wasn’t as easy as before. I made sure not to cover my face, though. I’m curious, but not that crazy!
After a few minutes of being partially buried, I decided to get out. It was a bit of a struggle, honestly. I had to push the balls off me and kind of wiggle my way out. It took some effort, but I managed. I can see how a little kid could get stuck, especially if there were a bunch of other kids playing around and jumping on top.
My conclusion? Well, it’s not exactly easy to suffocate in a ball pit, at least not in the way I tested it. If you just sit or lie down in one, you’ll probably be fine. But, if you try to bury yourself, or if there are lots of people piling on, it could get dicey. Breathing gets harder, and it’s a real workout to get out.
I also did some reading about ball pit safety. It turns out they can be pretty gross. I mean, think about all the kids snot, and god knows what else, that ends up in there. Apparently, they need to be cleaned regularly, like every day for the balls and every 3-6 months for a deep clean. Who knew?
So, that’s my ball pit adventure. It was definitely an interesting experience, and I learned a few things. Main takeaway? Ball pits are probably okay for most kids, but supervision is key. And maybe bring some hand sanitizer, just in case.
