Graffiti 80s Making a Comeback: Is it True? See How This Retro Style is Popping Up Again!
So, today I really got into this whole ’80s graffiti thing. I mean, I’ve always seen it around, you know, those colorful tags and murals on the walls, trains, and stuff. But today, I decided to actually try it out myself. Not on public property, of course! I’m not trying to get arrested or anything.
First, I did some digging around to see what made ’80s graffiti so special. Found out it was a big part of hip-hop culture back then. People used it to express themselves, especially in cities like New York where everything was kind of falling apart. There was this whole vibe of rebellion and making something out of nothing. That really resonated with me.
Started Small
I grabbed some cardboard and some spray paints from the local store. Nothing fancy, just the basic colors. I started with some simple tags, you know, just writing my name in different styles. It was harder than it looked! Getting those smooth lines and curves took some practice. I messed up a lot, but it was fun. After I wrote them in cardboard, I also tried to write down them on my sketchbook with some pencils.
Getting Bolder
After I got the hang of the basic tags, I moved on to bigger pieces. I tried copying some classic ’80s designs I found online. Lots of geometric shapes, those bright neon colors, and some really abstract stuff. I spent hours just experimenting with different color combinations and patterns. It was messy, I’m not gonna lie. Paint got everywhere, but it was worth it. I even tried to mimic some of the styles of those big names like Basquiat and Haring. Their work is just so cool and full of energy.
It’s More Than Just Paint
This whole experience made me realize that graffiti is more than just vandalism or whatever. It’s a real art form. It takes skill, creativity, and a whole lot of guts to put your work out there for everyone to see. I was a little bit nervous even though just tried them on cardboard or papers. I don’t know how they are so brave to do that on the wall or the trains.
I’m definitely not saying everyone should go out and start tagging walls. But I think it’s important to understand where this art comes from and what it means to the people who create it. I felt freedom and release when I tried to do that.
What’s Next?
I’m thinking of taking this further. Maybe try some bigger murals on canvas or something. I want to capture that raw, vibrant energy of ’80s graffiti in my own way. Also, I might find out more information about the history of that.

- Find my style: I want to develop my own unique voice within this art form.
It’s been a wild ride today, getting in touch with my inner ’80s graffiti artist. It’s messy, it’s loud, and it’s a whole lot of fun. I can’t wait to see where this takes me.
