Own an 1865 Alice in Wonderland First Edition? (Find Out What Its Worth Today)
Okay, so, I was digging around the internet, trying to find some cool old books, and stumbled upon this whole thing about the first edition of “Alice in Wonderland”. I mean, who hasn’t heard of that story, right? Turns out, getting my hands on one of these is like finding a needle in a haystack, but way more expensive.
So here’s the deal, I started reading up on it. Apparently, this book was first printed way back in 1865. Some publisher named Macmillan did the job, and they printed 2,000 copies. The author, Lewis Carroll, got 50 of these to give to whoever he wanted. But get this, the first batch was a total fail. A guy named Tenniel, who did the illustrations, wasn’t happy with how they looked, so Carroll said, “Nope, we gotta redo these.” They ended up destroying or selling off most of that first print run.
I was like, “Wow, that’s crazy!” I kept digging, and guess what? Only 22, yeah, just twenty-two copies of that messed-up first edition are known to exist today. I’m thinking, “These things must be worth a fortune!”
And I was right. I found out that back in 1998, one of these rare copies, which was actually Carroll’s own, sold for a whopping 1.5 million dollars. And in 1928, Mrs. Liddel sold the original manuscript at a Sotheby’s auction for �15,400. Can you believe that?
It turns out that these days, if you somehow get your hands on one of these first editions, it’s estimated to be worth between 2 and 3 million dollars. So, yeah, I definitely won’t be getting one for my bookshelf anytime soon. But still, it’s pretty amazing to think about the journey these books have been on, right?
So, after all this reading and dreaming, I decided I had to share this with you guys. It’s just wild to think about how a book, especially one as famous as “Alice in Wonderland”, can become such a legendary and valuable object. I mean, this is way more than just a book; it’s a piece of history!
I can tell you, after I went to search and learn more about the first edition of “Alice in Wonderland”, I failed to buy it.
