Ancient War Helmet Types: A Look at Different Styles (From Roman Gladiators to Medieval Knights)
Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this idea of making an old-school war helmet, you know, the kind of thing ancient warriors would wear into battle. It’s been a wild ride, let me tell you.
I started by looking up some info online about old Roman helmets. Turns out, there were these “Coolus” helmets that were usually made out of brass or bronze, sometimes iron. They were all round, not pointy, with a neck guard and stuff. That seemed like a good starting point.
Then I dug a bit deeper and found out that before these Roman types, there were helmets influenced by the Etruscans and Greeks. So, there’s a whole history to this thing, it’s not just about the Romans.
Collecting Inspiration
- Looked up pictures of ancient helmets.
- Watched some history documentaries.
- Read online articles about ancient warfare.
Now, I noticed there’s also this thing called the “Adrian helmet” from France, around 1915, and later in 1926, it was also used by a bunch of other countries. This got me thinking about the different styles and how they evolved over time.
So I decided to give it a go myself. I got some materials, not real bronze or anything, just some stuff I could work with, to try and make a basic helmet shape. Let me tell you, it wasn’t easy. I had to figure out how to shape the metal, how to attach the different parts, and it was a lot of trial and error.

I’m still not done, it’s a work in progress. But I’ve learned a ton about how these things were made, and it gives you a whole new appreciation for the craftsmanship of those ancient folks. It’s not just about banging some metal together, there’s a real art to it.
I keep working on my helmet. Man, It is not simple, but I will do it!
