Today, I really wanted to dive into something different, and I got this idea to mess around with Cubism and Surrealism. I know, it sounds kinda fancy, but trust me, it’s not as hard as it seems. So, I started by looking up some stuff online about these two art styles.
First thing I did was try to understand what Cubism is all about. Turns out, it’s this cool way of painting where things are broken down and put back together in weird, abstract ways. You know, like those Picasso paintings where everything looks like it’s made of blocks and angles. I watched a couple of videos explaining how these artists, like Picasso and Braque, totally changed the game in the early 1900s. It’s kinda mind-blowing how they just decided to see the world in a completely different way.
Next, I moved on to Surrealism. This one’s even trippier. It’s all about dreams and the unconscious mind. Think melting clocks and stuff that doesn’t make sense in the real world. I saw some works by artists like Dalí, and man, those guys were on another level. They just painted whatever weird stuff popped into their heads, no rules, no logic. It’s like stepping into someone else’s dream.
After getting a basic idea, I decided to give it a shot myself. I grabbed some paper and pencils – nothing fancy. For Cubism, I tried to draw my coffee mug, but instead of just drawing it normally, I drew it from different angles all at once. It looked kinda messed up, but in a cool way. I felt like a mini Picasso, haha. I spent a good hour just messing around with shapes and angles, trying to see how far I could push it before it just looked like a total mess.

I think that’s what these Surrealist artists were going for – just letting their imagination run wild.
The whole experience was pretty awesome. It’s not like I’m gonna become a famous artist or anything, but it was fun to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. It made me appreciate these art movements even more. They weren’t just painting pretty pictures; they were trying to show us the world in a whole new light. And hey, if I can get a little taste of that by doodling in my notebook, why not?
So yeah, that was my little adventure with Cubism and Surrealism. Maybe I’ll try it again sometime, maybe with colors next time. Who knows? The art world’s a big place, and it’s kinda cool to dip your toes in every now and then.
