Was Jesus a Stoic? A Simple Guide to the Philosophy and How It Relates to Jesuss Life.
Okay, so yesterday I got sucked into this wild idea: Was Jesus, like, a Stoic? I mean, you hear about Stoicism all the time these days – you know, being all chill and in control of your emotions and stuff. And then there’s Jesus, preaching about love and peace. Could there be a connection? It seemed crazy, but I had to find out.
I started by just googling around, trying to see what the general consensus was. Most of what I found said, “Nah, Jesus wasn’t a Stoic in the strict sense.” But they also mentioned some interesting similarities between what he taught and some Stoic ideas. That got me even more curious. I mean, if there were parallels, I wanted to know what they were!
So I dug deeper. I found some articles and even a few forum threads (yeah, I went there) that talked about specific examples. Like, one thing that stuck out was how Jesus handled tough situations. Remember when he got super angry at the temple? That’s definitely not very Stoic, right? They also mentioned how he ate at banquets and stuff. Stoics were more about that simple life. And then there is that bit where he was all sad about Lazarus dying. A true Stoic wouldn’t show that much emotion, I guess. I scribbled all of that down in my notebook – it was getting a little messy, but I was on a roll.
My Realizations
- First, Jesus was way more emotional than a Stoic. He felt things deeply, both good and bad.
- Second, He wasn’t all about that self-denial life. He enjoyed good food and company.
- Third, He seemed to care more about loving others and having faith than about controlling his reactions to everything.
But then I stumbled upon something else. This one dude, Benjamin Franklin, apparently listed “humility” as a major virtue and said to imitate both Socrates (a big name in Stoicism) AND Jesus. Whoa. And then I read that Thomas Jefferson, another big-brain, also compared Jesus’s morals to the Stoics. So, maybe there’s something to this whole connection after all? I mean if nature/fate is god’s will, that could make a theistic stoic, then Jesus, may be viewed as a theistic stoic. It’s all very interesting. I decided to watch some videos related to this and just do some more research.
I’m still not totally sure what to think. Jesus definitely wasn’t a full-blown Stoic, but he might have shared some common ground with them. I guess it just goes to show that even ancient philosophies can have surprising connections. It also makes me think about how different people interpret faith and virtue. Anyway, it was a fun little research project, even if I didn’t come up with a definitive answer. I gotta say, I’m feeling pretty satisfied with my nerdy deep dive today. Maybe I’ll tackle another philosophical mystery tomorrow!
