Giacometti Inspired Sculptures: How to Create Your Own Simple and Skinny Art Figures

Okay, so I got this idea to mess around with some art stuff, you know, trying to make something cool like those Giacometti sculptures. You’ve seen those, right? The super tall, skinny figures? Anyway, I thought, “Why not give it a shot?”

First, I had to figure out what to use. I remembered reading somewhere to use something easy to work with, like plasticine or clay. Even bread dough! So, I rummaged around and found some old clay I had lying around from who knows when. I figured this was the best choice.

Then the fun part started. I just started molding the clay, no real plan in mind. I pinched it, squished it, pulled it. I even grabbed a spoon from the kitchen and started messing around with that. Tried using the tip of a pencil to make some marks. And yeah, I even used my fingernails to scratch at it a bit. Just experimenting, you know?

Playing Around

  • Pushing and pulling: This was pretty basic, just trying to get the clay to move how I wanted.
  • Using tools: The spoon was surprisingly helpful for smoothing things out.
  • Fingernail action: This was good for adding some rough texture.

I wanted to get that stretched-out look like Giacometti’s work. So, I started pulling the clay upwards, trying to make it taller and thinner. It was kind of tricky, to be honest. The clay kept wanting to flop over or break. I had to keep remolding it and trying again.

Making It Tall

This was the hardest part. I kept trying to build it up, but it was a struggle. I even thought about using some wire inside to support it. Remembered something about cutting the wire. Or maybe cutting the “1”? Not sure what that meant. Anyway, I decided to keep it simple and just stick with the clay.

After a while, I actually started to get something that looked kind of like a person. It wasn’t perfect, not by a long shot, but it was definitely tall and skinny. I kept tweaking it, adding little details here and there. I even tried to make a little face, but that was super hard. Ended up just making some indents for the eyes and mouth.

Finally, I called it a day. My little clay figure was standing there, kind of wobbly, but definitely resembling those Giacometti sculptures. It was a fun little project. I learned that it’s not as easy as it looks to make art. But it’s definitely satisfying to see something you made with your own hands, even if it’s not a masterpiece.

I might try this again sometime. Maybe with different materials. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get good at it!
