So, the other day, I got it into my head that I needed to find out everything about the 1860 double eagle coin. Don’t ask me why, it just seemed like a cool thing to dive into. I started with a simple search, just to see what this coin was all about. Turns out, it’s not just any coin, it’s the second most common Type One double eagle from the Philadelphia mint in the 1860s. That got me hooked!
First thing I did was to try and see one of these coins for myself. I mean, how else do you get a feel for something like this? I looked around for a place to see the coin, you know, the specs, how much it might be worth, auction stuff. That was kinda tricky, there weren’t many places I could just go and see this stuff, but I did find some good info about the Liberty Head $20 MS version. I checked many resources and I found some details, but it wasn’t like I could hold it in my hand or anything.
Then, I dug into some history stuff. It’s kinda cool to read what people were saying about this coin back in the day. For example, I found this bit from an auction catalog from April 2022. They were talking about how the San Francisco Mint made 544,950 of these double eagles in 1860. Can you believe that? Over half a million coins! Then, I found the other source saying the Philadelphia Mint made even more, 577,670 to be exact. But only like 2,000 to 3,000 are still around. That’s wild, right?
I also learned about the 1860-O version, which is apparently way rarer. It’s the sixth rarest of the double eagles from the New Orleans Mint. It’s even rarer than the 1861-O, which I guess is a pretty big deal in the coin world.
My Little Adventure
So, after all this reading and digging, I really wanted to find someone who actually had one of these coins. I mean, I’m not a collector or anything, but it would be awesome to see one in real life. I started asking around, but no luck. It’s not like people just have these lying around, you know?
- Searching: I spent hours searching online, reading articles, and looking at pictures. It was fun, but it wasn’t the same as seeing the real thing.
- Asking Around: I asked some friends, even went to a local coin shop. The guy there was super helpful, but he didn’t have an 1860 double eagle. Go figure!
- Dreaming: Okay, I’ll admit it, I started dreaming about finding one of these coins at a flea market or something. It’s a long shot, I know, but a guy can dream, right?
So that’s where I’m at with my 1860 double eagle coin adventure. I might not have seen one yet, but I’ve learned a ton, and it’s been a blast. Maybe one day I’ll get lucky and actually hold one of these beauties. Until then, I’ll keep digging and dreaming. Who knows what other cool stuff I’ll stumble upon along the way?
