Next, I dug into the creatures and monsters. This was the fun part! I read about the “zmey,” which are basically dragons, but often way more complex, sometimes even helping humans. Then there are the “vampires,” which, it turns out, have a much longer and varied history in Balkan folklore than what we see in Hollywood movies. I sketched out a few of these creatures in my notebook, just to help visualize them.
After that, I looked into some of the common stories and legends. Many of them revolved around heroes, battles with monsters, and the founding of cities or nations. I noticed a lot of these stories had a strong connection to nature and the changing seasons. It’s like the people of the Balkans really saw the world around them in these mythical terms. I wrote summaries of a few key stories, just a paragraph each, to remember them by.
Finally, I tried to understand how these myths played out in everyday life. I read about rituals, festivals, and folk customs that are still practiced today, many of which have roots in these ancient stories. It was fascinating to see how these old beliefs still have a place in the modern world. I marked down some of the most interesting customs and made a note to look for videos of them later.

In the end, I felt like I had a pretty good handle on the basics of Balkan mythology. It’s such a rich and complex subject, full of fascinating stories and characters. I realized that this is just the tip of the iceberg, and there’s so much more to explore. I’m definitely planning to keep digging, maybe focusing on a specific region or type of myth next time. This little project turned out to be way more interesting than I expected, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.
