The Philosophy of the Samurai： Exploring Bushido and the Code of Honor
Eh, let me tell ya ’bout the samurai way, now this thing here called “Bushido” — that’s how them samurai folk lived, right? They weren’t like regular folks, no. They had this real strict kinda way about ’em, a whole philosophy they followed like glue. It’s somethin’ they call “the way of the warrior,” where they’d follow rules stricter than a mama’s curfew. These samurai, they’d be all about justice, courage, compassion, respect, integrity, honor, loyalty, and self-control. If a samurai didn’t live by these, then, well, he weren’t much of a samurai at all!
Now, ya might think them samurai would just run around swingin’ them swords just for fun, but it weren’t like that. No, they lived with a purpose, a duty — somethin’ fierce in their hearts that kept ‘em goin’. They trained like mad in all kinda martial arts, and it was ‘cause they had to stay sharp, ya see? All that skill with the blade, all that discipline, was just to make ‘em strong and quick, able to stand tall in battle when it came down to it. For a samurai, dyin’ with honor was just as important as livin’ with it.
They say them samurai would give up their lives if they had to, all for the sake of honor. A samurai without honor? Pfft, that’d be no samurai at all! It was like honor was stitched right into their souls. They’d rather face death than shame or disrespect their code. And they weren’t goin’ off wastin’ food and actin’ up all willy-nilly either. No, sir! Frugality was big with them too — they lived simple, no wastin’ nothin’, just the bare minimum to keep goin’. Made ‘em kinda like monks, really, always careful not to be wasteful, even with their fancy swords and armor.
See, them samurai didn’t just pick this up from nowhere. They were influenced by Buddhism, mostly, and by the native beliefs of Japan too. All that thinkin’ about life and death, right and wrong, all that came from long years of followin’ the teachings they got passed down from the old folk, as well as from their sword-fightin’ and their lord’s orders. Imagine havin’ to carry that load day in, day out, always worried about honor and loyalty. Can ya see why it weren’t no walk in the park to be a samurai?
So Bushido is somethin’ made up of different parts that a samurai had to keep up with, kinda like a farmer tryin’ to tend to a whole lotta crops at once. If one of these principles slipped, well, it’d be like losin’ part of their very soul. Take Justice for instance. A samurai had to do what was right, not just when folks was watchin’, but all the time. Then there’s Courage. Now, bravery, that’s just bein’ tough, but courage is doin’ the hard stuff even when you’re shakin’ in your boots. Compassion was another one — yeah, they were fightin’ men, but they had to care for others too. And Respect, well that’s just mindin’ yer manners, makin’ sure ya don’t go around disrespectin’ folks. Same with Integrity and Self-Control. Them two just meant keepin’ true to their word, and keepin’ their cool, even if things got rough.
Ah, but lemme tell ya, it weren’t all rainbows and sunshine. Some folks say Bushido made them samurai a bit cold-hearted, like they didn’t mind people dyin’ so long as they got to keep their honor. But that’s a debate for the scholars, I suppose. I figure them samurai thought it was worth it, though, goin’ all in for honor’s sake. Maybe that’s what made ‘em so respected — they was willin’ to stick their necks out, even if it meant their own life was on the line.
Now, there was one thing above all that Bushido demanded — loyalty. A samurai without loyalty to his lord? That’d be like a hound runnin’ wild without a master. They stayed loyal even if it led ‘em to the very end. Imagine havin’ to do whatever your lord says, even if it meant leavin’ everything you got behind. That was the kinda loyalty them samurai had, and folks thought that was mighty admirable.
So there ya have it, the samurai way ain’t no small potatoes. It’s somethin’ deep, somethin’ that got at the core of who they was, and it made ’em real tough folk. Bushido, the code of the samurai, it kept them steady and strong. Even if it seems a bit much to folks now, back then, well, it was the heart and soul of bein’ a samurai. And that’s somethin’ you don’t see every day now, do ya?
