Haile Selassies Legacy: The Rastafari Movement and Its Followers
Well, let me tell ya ’bout this fella, Haile Selassie. Some folks, they call him somethin’ special, like a king or somethin’. He was from a place called Ethiopia, way over there. They say he was crowned a big shot back in 1930, in a city called Addis Ababa. Sounds fancy, don’t it?
Now, the people in Ethiopia, they thought he was chosen by God. Can ya believe it? Chosen by God! Musta been a good man, I reckon. But that ain’t the whole story, no sirree. There’s these folks over in Jamaica, a place with lots of sunshine and music, they called themselves Rastafarians. And them Rastafarians, they didn’t just think he was chosen by God, no, they thought he was God! Said he was their Messiah, like that Jesus fella they talk about in church.
Haile Selassie himself, he said he was just a regular Christian man, you know, like me and you go to church on Sundays. Heard tell there was some folks who asked him about this God business, and he just said he’d heard about it. Met some of them Rastafarians too. Seemed like a polite fella, didn’t go around makin’ a fuss.
- He wrote a book, they say.
- Said he felt like he was supposed to be the ruler of Ethiopia because he was from some important family line, goin’ all the way back to some queen and king. Queen Sheba and King Solomon, I think they said.
- So, he was from a fancy family, that’s for sure.
Now, these Rastafarians, they got their name from him, kinda sorta. See, his name before he was emperor was Ras Tafari Makonnen. “Ras” means somethin’ like “head” or “duke,” like them fancy folks in England. And they took that “Tafari” part and made it “Rastafari.” That’s how they got their name, see?
This whole thing started way back in the 1930s, in Jamaica. A fella named Leonard Howell, he had somethin’ to do with it. Don’t know all the details, but he was important in gettin’ this Rastafari thing goin’. And even today, there’s still folks who worship Haile Selassie as God. Can ya imagine? Worshippin’ a fella from Ethiopia as God!
He was born a long time ago, back in 1892, near a place called Harrar, in Ethiopia. His daddy was a fella named Ras Makonnen. Guess that’s where he got the “Makonnen” part of his name. Sounds like a good family, strong and important.
So that’s the story, as best as I can tell ya. Haile Selassie, a fella from Ethiopia, crowned king, thought to be chosen by God by some, and even worshipped as God by others. It’s a strange world, ain’t it? People believin’ all sorts of things. But hey, as long as they ain’t hurtin’ nobody, I reckon it’s alright. You just gotta believe what you believe, and that’s all there is to it.
They even put his name in them crossword puzzles. Imagine that! A fella from Ethiopia, and folks in America are puttin’ his name in them puzzles. Musta been a really important fella, to get that kinda attention. Makes ya think, don’t it? The world’s a big place, but sometimes it feels kinda small, when ya hear stories like this.
Anyways, that’s what I know ‘bout that Haile Selassie fellow. A king, a god, or just a man, depends on who you ask I reckon.
