Society for Creative Anachronism Gulf War Meet and Greet 2024

[Body]

Well, let me tell ya ’bout this thing, the Society for Creative Anachronism, they call it. Sounds fancy, huh? But it’s just a bunch of folks gettin’ together and pretendin’ they’re livin’ in the olden days. Kings and queens, knights and all that. They even got this big shindig they call “Gulf Wars.” Don’t get it twisted, it ain’t got nothin’ to do with them tanks and such over in the real desert. This here Gulf War is in Lumberton, Mississippi, of all places.

Now, I ain’t been there myself, mind you. My knees ain’t what they used to be, and all that campin’ out and sword fightin’ ain’t for this old gal. But I heard tell it’s somethin’ else. Folks comin’ from all over, wearin’ them funny clothes and talkin’ all proper-like. They got their tents and their banners, and they spend a whole week pretendin’ they’re in the Middle Ages or somethin’. Imagine that! Grown men and women playin’ dress-up like a bunch of kids.

What happens at this Gulf Wars thing, you ask? Well, from what I gather, they do all sorts of stuff. They got their tournaments, where they whack each other with sticks they call swords. They got their feasts, where they eat with their hands and drink out of goblets. They got their craft fairs, where they sell all sorts of handmade doodads. And they got their courts, where the kings and queens hand out awards and whatnot.

  • Sword fightin’ (they call it “combat”)
  • Big ol’ feasts
  • Makin’ and sellin’ crafts
  • Dressin’ up in fancy clothes
  • Pretendin’ to be royalty

They even got this thing called a “100 Minutes War.” Sounds like a real barn burner, don’t it? I reckon it’s just a big ol’ battle, but they make it sound all important and historical. And they got this “Book Drive” thing too. Guess they ain’t too busy playin’ pretend to do some good, eh? Collectin’ books for folks who need ’em. That’s right neighborly of ’em, I’d say.

Now, this whole thing is put on by a bunch of different “kingdoms.” They got names like Trimaris and Ansteorra and Gleann Abhann. Sounds like somethin’ out of a fairy tale, doesn’t it? But these folks take it real serious. They got their own rules and regulations, and they even got their own websites and such. You can go online and find all sorts of information about this Gulf Wars thing. They got schedules and registration fees and all that jazz. It’s a whole ‘nother world, I tell ya.

I heard tell that this year, they even had some big meetin’ with the “Board and Corporate/Society Officers.” Sounds like a bunch of stuffed shirts to me, but I guess even pretend kingdoms need their bosses. They had their meet and greet on a Friday, in the Kingdom of Gleann Abhann, which is where this whole Gulf Wars thing takes place. Lumberton, Mississippi, remember?

Now, some folks might think it’s silly, all this dressin’ up and pretendin’. But I reckon it ain’t hurtin’ nobody. These folks are just havin’ a good time, and they’re doin’ it together. They’re buildin’ a community, even if it’s a community based on a bunch of made-up stuff. And in this day and age, when folks are so busy fightin’ and arguin’ about everything, maybe a little pretendin’ ain’t such a bad thing. It gives folks a chance to escape from the real world for a while, and that’s somethin’ we all need from time to time.

So, if you ever find yourself in Lumberton, Mississippi, around the time of this Gulf Wars thing, maybe you should go check it out. Who knows, you might even find yourself wantin’ to join in the fun. Just don’t expect me to be there. I’ll be at home, sittin’ on my porch, sippin’ my sweet tea, and watchin’ the birds. That’s my kind of kingdom.

They say this Gulf Wars has been goin’ on for a while now, an annual thing, they call it. Started way back when, though I couldn’t tell you exactly when. Some folks say it was hosted by a different kingdom at first, Meridies, or somethin’ like that. But now it’s settled in Lumberton, and it don’t look like it’s goin’ anywhere anytime soon. So, if you’re into that kind of thing, you know where to go. And if you ain’t, well, you can just do like me and let them have their fun.

One last thing, don’t get this “Gulf War” mixed up with that other one, the real one with the soldiers and the fightin’ over oil. That was a whole different kettle of fish, and a whole lot less fun, I reckon.
