Top Picks: CS Lewis Greatest Books You Absolutely Cant Miss.
Alright, let’s gab about this fella, C.S. Lewis, and his books. Folks say he wrote some good ‘uns, real good ‘uns. I ain’t no scholar, mind you, but I know what I like, and I reckon some of his stuff is worth a look-see.
Now, the one everybody and their grandma knows is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Yep, that’s the one with the kids and the magic closet, or wardrobe, as them fancy folks call it. First time I heard about it, I thought, “A closet? What in tarnation is so special ’bout a closet?” But then I heard it takes ya to another world, a place with talking animals and a mean ol’ witch. That’s somethin’ ain’t it? This here book, it came out in 1950, and it’s part of a whole bunch of books called The Chronicles of Narnia. There’s like seven of ‘em, I think. All about that Narnia place.
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950): This one kicks off the whole Narnia thing. Kids, magic, a lion, a witch… it’s got it all.
- Prince Caspian (not sure when it came out): Heard this one’s about the kids goin’ back to Narnia and things ain’t so good. Gotta help out a prince, they do.
- The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (don’t ask me the year): This time, they’re sailin’ on a boat! To the end of the world, they say. Sounds like a long trip to me.
- The Silver Chair (no idea): Heard tell there’s a lost prince in this one too, and they gotta go find him. Sounds like them kids are always busy.
- The Horse and His Boy (who knows?): This one’s a bit different, talkin’ ’bout a boy and a horse runnin’ away. Still in Narnia, though.
- The Magician’s Nephew (beats me): This one goes way back, tellin’ ya how Narnia got started and all. Before the kids even showed up.
- The Last Battle (your guess is as good as mine): Well, this is the end of it all. The big fight for Narnia. Hope them kids win.
Now, Mr. Lewis, he didn’t just write about kids and magic. He also wrote some stuff for grown-ups, I hear. There’s this book called Mere Christianity. Sounds heavy, don’t it? Folks say it’s about what Christians believe. I ain’t read it myself, but I hear it’s pretty popular. He also wrote some other things, like essays and stories. One time, during the war, he wrote somethin’ called Learning in War-Time. Imagine that, learnin’ while the world’s blowin’ up around ya. He was a smart fella, that Mr. Lewis.
There’s this other book, Till We Have Faces, came out in 1956. Heard Mr. Lewis liked this one best outta all his books. It’s a story ’bout a queen and some gods, a retelling of some old myth, they say. Cupid and Psyche, somethin’ like that. Sounds complicated to me, but I reckon it must be good if he liked it so much.
He also said some things that folks like to quote. Like, “There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” And this one, “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.” Now that’s somethin’ I can agree with! A good cuppa tea and a good long book, that’s the life.
So, there ya have it. A little bit ’bout C.S. Lewis and his books. He wrote about magic, and faith, and all sorts of things. Some of it’s for kids, some of it’s for grown-ups, but it all seems to make folks think. And that ain’t a bad thing, now is it? If you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to read, you could do worse than pickin’ up one of his books. Just don’t expect it to be easy readin’ all the time. Some of it’s gonna make ya scratch your head a bit.
