Laissez Faire Political Cartoon: What Does It Mean and Show?
Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout this here “laissez faire” thing. I ain’t no fancy scholar, ya know? Just a plain ol’ person tryin’ to make sense of it all. But from what I gather, it’s all about lettin’ things be, like, not messin’ around too much. Sounds kinda nice, right? Like, nobody botherin’ ya, nobody tellin’ ya what to do.
But then again, I think about it some more, and I ain’t so sure. See, some folks say it means no rules, no nothin’. Just let the chips fall where they may. And that worries me. ‘Cause, well, what happens if them chips fall all on one side? What if some folks get all the chips and others get nothin’ at all? That don’t sound so fair, does it?
I saw this funny picture once, a cartoon, ya know? It showed these big ol’ fat cats, sittin’ around a table piled high with food. And they were all sayin’, “Laissez faire! Laissez faire!” Meanin’, “Leave us alone! Don’t touch our stuff!” Meanwhile, there were all these skinny folks starin’ at them, hungry and miserable. That picture, it kinda stuck with me. Made me think that maybe this “laissez faire” ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Someone told me it started way back when, durin’ some kinda “Industrial Revolution”. Sounds fancy, but I bet it was just a bunch of folks workin’ their tails off while others got rich. That’s the way it always is, seems like. Them big bosses, they probably loved this “laissez faire” idea. No government stickin’ their noses in, tellin’ ’em they gotta pay folks more or keep things safe. Just let ’em do whatever they please, rake in the dough, and not worry about nobody else.
- No taxes? Sounds good on the surface, but how we gonna pay for the roads? Or schools?
- No rules? That means them big companies can do whatever they want. Dump their trash in the river, pay folks peanuts, who’s gonna stop ‘em?
- Just let the market decide? Well, the market don’t care about folks like me. It only cares about money.
I reckon it’s like this. If you got a good hand, “laissez faire” probably sounds mighty fine. You don’t want nobody messin’ with your winnings. But if you ain’t got much, well, then you might need a little help. You might need somebody to step in and make sure things are a little bit fairer. And that’s where I get confused. Is it about freedom or just an excuse to be greedy?
This cartoon idea, I think it’s a good way to show what’s really going on. You know, a picture is worth a thousand words, they say. Show them big bosses with their pockets overflowing, sayin’ “laissez faire!” And then show the regular folks, workin’ hard and still barely gettin’ by. That’ll tell ya the story better than any fancy words.
I also heard someone say “laissez faire” means “let the evils last”. Now, that’s a scary thought. Does it mean we just gotta sit back and watch bad things happen? That don’t seem right. We gotta stand up for what’s right, don’t we? We gotta make sure everybody gets a fair shake. Even if it means havin’ some rules and some folks lookin’ out for us.
I ain’t no economist, mind ya. But I know what’s right and what’s wrong. And this “laissez faire” thing… well, it just sounds like a fancy way of sayin’ “every man for himself.” And that ain’t the kind of world I wanna live in. We gotta help each other out. We gotta look out for the little guy. And sometimes, that means havin’ some rules and havin’ some folks in charge to make sure them rules are followed.
So, yeah, “laissez faire.” It sounds good on paper maybe. But in real life? I ain’t so sure. I think we need a little bit of somethin’ more. We need some fairness. We need some kindness. And we need some folks who ain’t afraid to stand up and say, “That ain’t right!” That’s what I think, anyway. Just an old woman’s opinion, mind ya. But I think it’s worth somethin’.
