Alright, let’s talk about them… uh… Norse Pagan whatchamacallits, them sayings, you know? Them Vikings, they was tough folks, always fightin’ and yellin’. They had some words, though, some real strong words. Kinda like my old man used to say, “If ya gonna do somethin’, do it right, or don’t do it at all.” Them Vikings, they lived by that, sorta.
Them Strong Viking Words
One thing them Vikings was always talkin’ about was courage. Like, “Fear is for the weak, the brave stand tall.” I ain’t no Viking, but I get it. Life throws rocks at ya, ya gotta stand up and throw ’em back. Ain’t got no time for cryin’. My ma always said, “Wipe your tears and get on with it.” Vikings probably said somethin’ like that too, but with more swords and stuff. They was all about fightin’, you know? Protectin’ their own, fightin’ for what they believed in. They’d say, “A warrior’s heart beats strong, even in the face of death.” Makes sense, I guess. If you’re gonna fight, might as well go all in.

Them Vikings, they wasn’t just about fightin’ though. They thought a lot about life, about fate, about the gods. They had sayings for all that too. Like, “Fate is woven by the Norns,” them weird sisters who decided everything. Kinda scary if ya think about it, but them Vikings, they just accepted it. They’d say, “What will be, will be.” Like when my cow Bessie got sick, no matter what I did, she just wouldn’t get better. Doc Johnson said it was just her time. Fate, I guess, just like the Vikings said. They had another one, “The gods watch over us,” kinda like how the preacher talks about the Lord lookin’ after us. Different gods, I reckon, but the same idea.
Vikings and Wisdom
Them Vikings, they wasn’t all brawn and no brains. They had sayings about wisdom too. They said, “A wise man learns from the mistakes of others, a fool learns only from his own.” Sounds about right. I always told my kids, “Listen to your elders, they know a thing or two.” That’s kinda what the Vikings meant, I think. They also said, “Think before you speak, your words can be sharper than any sword.” My grandpa used to say something similar, “Hold your tongue, boy, less you want a whippin’.” Again, Vikings a bit more violent, but the point is the same. Words matter. They can hurt, or they can heal.
And then there’s the deal about respect and community. They were big on that. “Respect your elders, cherish your kin, and defend your home.” Sounds like somethin’ my grandma would say, and it’s good advice. You gotta stick together, you gotta take care of your own. That’s what the Vikings believed, that’s what I believe. They’d also say, “A good name is better than riches.” Means your reputation is important. You gotta be honest, ya gotta be dependable. People gotta trust ya. Just like in my village, if you break your word, nobody gonna wanna deal with you no more.
Them Vikings, they had a whole lotta sayings for different things. For battle, for life, for love, even for drinkin’, I bet! I don’t know all their gods and all their stories, but I understand the gist of it. They wanted to be strong, they wanted to be wise, they wanted to be remembered. And you know what? They are remembered. All these years later, we’re still talkin’ about ’em, talkin’ about their words. That’s somethin’ ain’t it? Maybe there’s somethin’ to them old Viking sayings after all. They teach ya how to live, how to fight, how to be a good person. And that ain’t so different from what my ma and pa always told me. Just with less axes.
So, what does it all mean?
Well, to me, it means that even though times change, some things stay the same. People always gonna need courage, always gonna need wisdom, always gonna need each other. And them old Viking sayings, they remind us of that. They ain’t just words, they’re lessons. Lessons about life, about death, about how to be a good person in a tough world. And that’s somethin’ we can all learn from, even if we ain’t no Vikings.
