How’d They Make This Chainmail?
- First, gotta make them little rings. Lots and lots of ’em. I reckon they heated up the metal and pounded it thin, then bent it into circles.
- Then, they gotta link them rings together, one by one. Musta been a real pain in the neck, all that fiddlin’ around.
- They’d keep addin’ rings, makin’ a kinda sheet of metal. Then they’d shape it into a shirt, or sometimes a hood, even pants!
It weren’t no quick job, that’s for sure. Heard tell it could take a week or two to make just one shirt. And them shirts, they weren’t light neither. A head coverin’, they called it a hood, could weigh as much as a sack of potatoes, maybe more! A whole shirt, well, that could weigh as much as a small hog, heavy as all get out. Can you imagine luggin’ that around all day? My old bones would be creakin’ somethin’ fierce!
Two Main Types of Chainmail Shirts
Now, there were two main kinds of these chainmail shirts. One was called a hauberk. That one had sleeves, went all the way down your arms. Kept your whole upper body covered up. The other kind was a habergeon. That one was like a vest, didn’t have no sleeves. Guess it depended on how much protection ya needed, or maybe how hot it was outside. Can’t imagine wearin’ all that metal in the summer heat, must have been like cookin’ in an oven!
What Did Chainmail Do?
Well, it weren’t gonna stop no arrows or nothin’ like that. But if someone came at ya with a sword or a knife, that chainmail would do a pretty good job of keepin’ ya from gettin’ sliced open. Them rings would catch the blade, kinda spread out the force of the blow. It weren’t perfect, mind ya. Ya could still get bruised up somethin’ awful, or even break a bone, but it was a whole heap better than nothin’. It was real good at stoppin’ cuts and such. Made a difference between goin’ home or goin’ to the grave, I tell ya.
Where did they use it?
They wore this metal stuff all over, seems like. Europe mostly, for a long, long time. Kings and knights and all them fellas. But they used it in other places too, way out East, in them hot countries. Different folks, different ways of fightin’, but they all saw the sense in wearin’ some metal to keep from gettin’ killed.
Lasting Power of Chainmail
Even though they don’t use chainmail like they used to, it’s still pretty neat stuff. It shows ya how clever them old-timers were. They didn’t have no fancy machines or nothin’, just their own two hands and some simple tools. But they figured out how to make somethin’ that could save a fella’s life. And that, I reckon, is somethin’ to be admired. You gotta hand it to ‘em, they were tough as nails and smart as whips, them old armor makers.
