Picasso and Modigliani: How Did They Change Modern Art?

So, I’ve been messing around with some art stuff lately, and it’s been a real trip. I decided to dive into the works of Picasso and Modigliani. Two heavyweights, right? I wanted to see what made these guys tick and how their styles are different yet kinda the same.

First off, I started by looking up a bunch of their paintings online. You know, just scrolling through images, getting a feel for their vibes. Modigliani’s stuff, especially from 1914 to 1916, is really geometric. It’s like he took a ruler and compass to his portraits. But at the same time, you can tell he was hanging out with the Cubist crowd, Picasso included. Their styles aren’t identical, but you can see some shared DNA there.

Then I dug into Picasso a bit more. This guy was a wild man. He’d throw anything into his art – newspaper clippings, random objects, whatever he could find. And he wasn’t afraid to try new things. Collage, sculpture, you name it. He did it. I tried to replicate some of it. I grabbed some old newspapers, cut them up, and tried to make something that looked like it belonged in one of his paintings. It was messy, but fun.

Experimenting with Feelings

The biggest thing I learned is how these artists painted feelings, not just what they saw. Like, they’d look at a scene and paint how it made them feel inside. That’s wild, right? I tried doing that too. I looked at my messy room and tried to paint how it made me feel – chaotic and overwhelmed. It turned out looking like a jumble of colors and shapes, but hey, that’s the point. And it is the first time, I will try it more.

Modern Art is Raw

This whole modern art thing is about being raw and emotional. It’s not about making things look pretty or perfect. It’s about expressing yourself in the most honest way possible. I read somewhere that a lot of artists started using photos instead of making people sit for hours for portraits. It saved time and let them focus on capturing the essence of a person, not just their likeness.

And, I noticed that I can find these styles easily in the LaM collection. You can see three series — modern and contemporary art and Art Brut at one time. It is amazing to find different types of art together.

I tried to incorporate that into my own experiments. I took some selfies and tried to paint them in the style of Modigliani and Picasso. Let’s just say the results were… interesting. My friends couldn’t stop laughing, but I think I captured something unique. It’s the spirit that counts, right?

Inspiration is Everywhere

The whole process was a real eye-opener. It’s amazing how much you can learn by just diving in and trying things out. And you can find inspiration everywhere – in museums like I found in LaM, in books, even in your own messy room. I did not know that I can be so inspired by art before this.

  • Step 1: Looked up paintings by Modigliani and Picasso.
  • Step 2: Tried to copy Picasso’s collage style with old newspapers.
  • Step 3: Painted my feelings about my messy room.
  • Step 4: Experimented with painting selfies in their styles.
  • Step 5: Realized inspiration is everywhere. And also visited LaM.

So yeah, that’s my little art adventure. It was messy, it was challenging, but it was also a ton of fun. I might not be the next Picasso or Modigliani, but I definitely learned a lot and had a blast doing it. And I even found my new favorite place LaM. Maybe I will put more about LaM later.
