Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with this artist, Royo, and I gotta say, it’s been a wild ride. I’m not gonna lie, I was totally sucked in by all those shiny, happy pictures people post online. You know, the ones with the ladies looking all fancy and stuff.
First off, I spent like, a whole day just scrolling through images of his work. It’s like, everywhere! Every website, every blog, they all had some Royo painting on them. It’s crazy! I was like, “Who is this guy, and why is everyone so obsessed with him?”
So, I started digging. Turns out, this Royo dude is some kind of big shot Spanish painter. Everyone keeps going on about his “impeccable painting technique” and how he’s a “Spanish master“. Apparently, he’s famous for painting these portraits of women, and people are all over them. I mean, I get it, they’re pretty, but it’s a bit much, right?
Then, I found out that he studied with some other fancy painter named Aldolfo Ferrer Amblat when he was 18. Like, who even does that anymore? It’s like something out of a movie. It seems he is a professional painter and he really knows how to paint.
Anyways, I decided to try to copy one of his paintings. Yeah, I know, I’m not exactly an art student, but I figured, how hard could it be? Boy, was I wrong. It took me forever just to get the basic shapes right, and don’t even get me started on the colors. I used up all my watercolors.
I tried to paint a portrait first. Spent hours on it. Ended up throwing my sketch book across the room in frustraition. Those portraits are hard! All those little details in the face and the hair… forget about it. The colors! Don’t even get me started on mixing those skin tones and blending everything smoothly. Total nightmare. My lady ended up looking like a lumpy potato with a bad sunburn. I messed up.
So I moved on to one of his simpler landscape-type paintings with a lady in the distance. Figured that would be easier, right? Wrong again. Still super tricky! Getting the light to hit the water just right, and making the trees look like actual trees and not just green blobs… ugh. My painting ended up looking like a kindergartener’s finger painting project. No joke, I showed it to my kid and they thought I was making fun of their art.

- Failed.
- Tried to copy a landscape painting with a lady.
- Failed again.
I’m not gonna lie, after a whole week of trying and failing, I was pretty much done. I mean, I appreciate the guy’s talent, but I’m definitely not cut out for this kind of art. My hands just don’t move that way. It is harder than I thought.
In the end, I just ended up with a bunch of messed up paintings and a new appreciation for people who can actually paint. It’s way harder than it looks. I think I’ll just stick to admiring Royo’s work from a distance. And maybe taking up knitting or something. Something less…painful.

So, yeah, that’s my Royo adventure. It was a mess, but hey, at least I tried, right? Now I can see why people go crazy about this guy’s paintings. It is not easy. I know I will never do it again.
