Art Deco Wood: What Makes This Style So Unique?
Today, I wanted to mess around with something a bit different, you know, get my hands dirty with some art deco wood stuff. I’ve always been a fan of that bold, fancy look, so I thought, why not give it a shot myself?
So, I started by looking up some pictures online. Just to get an idea of what I was going for. That art deco style, it’s all about those geometric shapes and strong lines, right? And I saw a lot of folks using shiny stuff like brass and chrome, but I wanted to stick with wood for now.
Getting Started
- First thing I did was grab some wood I had lying around. Nothing fancy, just some regular planks.
- Then, I sketched out some designs on paper. Lots of triangles, zigzags, and those sunburst patterns you see in art deco stuff.
After that, I got to work cutting the wood. I used a saw to make all those geometric shapes. It took a while, and I definitely made some mistakes along the way. But hey, that’s part of the process, right? My hands were all rough, but it was kind of fun.
Putting It Together
Once I had all the pieces cut out, I started putting them together. I used wood glue and some clamps to hold everything in place. It was like a big puzzle, trying to figure out which piece went where. I messed up a few times and had to redo some parts, but eventually, it started to come together.
Then came the sanding. Oh boy, the sanding. I spent hours just sanding down all the edges, trying to get everything smooth and even. My arms were killing me, but I kept at it. After that, I put on a coat of stain. I went with a dark, rich color to really make those patterns pop.
The Final Touches
Finally, I added a layer of varnish to give it a nice, glossy finish. And you know what? It actually turned out pretty good! I mean, it’s not perfect, but I’m proud of it. It’s got that art deco vibe I was going for, and it was all made by me. My living room’s got a new centerpiece now, and it’s a good conversation starter, I guess.
So, yeah, that’s my little art deco wood project. It was a lot of work, but I’m glad I did it. Maybe next time, I’ll try using some of those fancy materials like brass or marble. But for now, I’m happy with my wooden masterpiece. It’s not every day you can say you made something like this with your own two hands, right?
