Think Like a Historian Poster: How It Helps Students Love History Class More!
Okay, so today I want to talk about this project I’ve been working on. It’s called “Think Like a Historian,” and basically, it’s a poster I made. Sounds simple, right? But it actually took some doing, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
First off, I started with gathering some ideas. I wanted this poster to really help people, especially students, to get into the mindset of a historian. So, I looked up some stuff online, read a few articles, and thought about what a historian actually does. They’re like detectives of the past, piecing together stories from clues, right?
Next, I brainstormed the key things a historian does. I thought, they must source their information, check where it comes from, and if it’s reliable. Then, they look at the context, like what was happening at the time that might have influenced things. After that, I figured, they must read between the lines, do some close reading to catch the subtle hints and biases. And of course, they gotta look at different sources and see if they agree or not, that’s called corroboration. They also probably consider the author’s point of view, I decided to call that author’s POV. Finally, they must look at the time period, I called that historical period. I got these ideas from the College Board’s AP history exams. That seems like a good way to summarize how a historian thinks.
After I had these six main points, I started designing the poster. I wanted it to be visually appealing, you know, something that catches the eye but also easy to understand. So, I picked a clean, simple design with a whitewash wood background and black writing.
Then, I created sections for each of the six skills. Under each one, I wrote a short, clear explanation of what that skill is all about. Like, for sourcing, I wrote something about asking who created the document and why. For context, I put in a bit about considering the time and place of the event. I also wanted to make sure it’s very clear that this is a series of steps, and each step should be followed one by one.
Once the design was done, I printed it out. I even made a few copies, thinking they could be useful in classrooms or study groups. I am quite satisfied with the final result. It’s quite a nice feeling to see your idea come to life like that, you know?
I ended up putting the poster up in my study. It’s a nice reminder for me, too, whenever I’m doing my own research or writing. And hey, if it helps even one person think a bit more critically about history, then I guess it’s a job well done.
So, that’s my little project. It wasn’t just about making a poster, but more about understanding and sharing a way of thinking. Hope you guys find it interesting or maybe even useful. What do you think? Any ideas on how to improve it? Let me know!
