Well, y’all must’ve heard the fuss ‘bout this Bacchus feller at them Paris Olympics comin’ up in 2024, huh? Some folks are sayin’ this whole thing’s a bit much, especially with them pictures and whatnot at the openin’ ceremony. Now, I don’t rightly know much ‘bout fancy god folk and Olympians, but I reckon it’s high time we take a look at who this Bacchus is and why he’s been causin’ a stir.
Now, Bacchus, or Dionysus as they call ‘im in them old Greek stories, he’s the god of wine and celebration. Ain’t that somethin’? If you ask me, he sounds like a fella you’d wanna invite to a party. He’s all about livin’ it up, havin’ a good time, and most importantly—wine. I reckon they could use a god like him every time they open up a bottle of red at family gatherings! But, turns out, Bacchus ain’t just about raisin’ a glass. He’s got himself wrapped up in the history of France, and that’s what got folks talkin’ when the Paris 2024 Olympics put ‘im front and center at their big ol’ fancy show.
See, during the opening ceremony—now, I’m told it’s all gonna be real glamorous—there was a big ol’ display of Bacchus sittin’ at a table, lookin’ all celebratory, like he was in the middle of one of them big feasts. But some people, bless their hearts, said it looked a bit too much like them religious pictures they see in churches—like “The Last Supper” by that fancy painter, Leonardo da Vinci. Now, I don’t know about all them fine art details, but I reckon if you’ve been to church, you might’ve seen that image—Jesus and his disciples sittin’ at a table before things got all dramatic-like. Well, some folks didn’t much like seein’ Bacchus in that kind of scene, and they sure let folks know about it.
It caused a bit of an uproar, and some church folks and politicians even got their knickers in a twist over it. I reckon they thought it was disrespectful. So, them organizers of the Paris Olympics, they had to apologize and clear things up, sayin’ it wasn’t meant to mock anything sacred, but instead to celebrate Bacchus’s connection to good times and wine. Now, you’d think folks could just let it be, but I guess when you got big events like this, everybody’s got an opinion, don’t they?
But here’s the thing. Bacchus, he’s a god tied right up with France. In fact, the folks who put this big ceremony together said that Bacchus is the god of not just wine, but also festivities. And France, well, they do love their wine, don’t they? So, I reckon it makes sense that they’d want to celebrate Bacchus in this fancy way at the Olympics. After all, it ain’t every day you get to show off your country’s culture and history to the whole wide world.
Now, as for the rest of the Olympics, there’s a few things changin’ around too. Baseball and softball, which made a return at the Tokyo games, ain’t gonna be part of the Paris Olympics. Ain’t that somethin’? I reckon them baseball folks must be a little disappointed, but hey, you can’t have everything. But, I guess it’s all part of the tradition—some things stay, some things go.
And I tell ya what, the controversy over Bacchus sure ain’t the only thing that’s been stirrin’ up trouble. There was a bit of a mix-up too, when they introduced the South Korean delegation as North Korea at the ceremony. You’d think they’d get that right, wouldn’t you? The International Olympic Committee had to apologize for that one too. Seems like there’s always somethin’ goin’ wrong in them big fancy events, don’t it?
But despite all the kerfuffle, I reckon the Paris 2024 Olympics is still gonna be a sight to see. With Bacchus there celebratin’ and the whole world watchin’, there’s bound to be plenty of excitement. And if nothing else, it’ll give folks somethin’ to talk about, like me and you sittin’ here jawin’ on about it now. So, if you ask me, it’s gonna be a grand ol’ time. Just don’t get too worked up over a god and a table—there’s bigger fish to fry!
